Welcome message by the Chief Executive

Welcome to the website of the Dar Rapid Transit Agency (DART). DART Agency operates under the Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government through the Ministerial Advisory Board to establish and operate Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Dar es Salaam City. The need to introduce BRT system in Dar es Salaam came after a realization of a steady multiplication of the city populace and the inclination of people to own and drive private cars which have resulted in slow mobility of traffic. To obviate heavy traffic jams, the Government of Tanzania made a meticulous analysis on public urban transport from which it came up with the idea of BRT which is cheaper to operate, comfortable and affordable to all users.
Differentiating itself from the current public urban transport system, popularly known as daladala, the DART system will be using quality high capacity buses which meet international service standards, environmentally friendly, operating on exclusive lanes, at less travelling time while ensuring user satisfaction.
As planned, DART system will be implemented in six phases starting with Phase 1 which includes Morogoro Road, Kawawa Road North, Msimbazi Street, and Kivukoni Front, which all together cover 20.9 kilometres. The infrastructure development of Phase 1 was on August 10, 2010 launched by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. The construction of infrastructure development has started with the construction of bus terminal at Kivukoni Front.
Upon completion of infrastructure development of Phase 1, DART Agency is expected to oversee the utilization of high capacity buses each with the ability to carry 140 passengers, sitting and standing about 145 articulated buses will be used on seven routes within the trunk corridor and 221 normal buses with the ability to carry 50 passengers will be used on 15 routes outside trunk corridor.
DART system will be issuing smart cards for the users to board the buses. In that case, there will be no conductors. This will help avoid over-speeding and harassing of students. Since DART system is modern, it will accommodate all road users in which there will be lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. Also, there will be developed open spaces and parking facilities especially for bicycles near stations and terminals.
Apart from improving public urban transport in the city of Dar es Salaam, DART system intends to create more jobs to residents by inviting all people to invest in the DART system bus operators, fund management and fare collection companies.

The DART Agency’s website therefore intends to provide you with information about the progress and output on the implementation of the DART project from time to time. I hope you will enjoy visiting our website and perhaps be ready to air your views and opinions concerning the project. For further information about the DART project, please contact the Chief Executive or Public Relations Manager.
